To obtain the PgMP certification, candidates must meet certain eligibility criteria and pass the PgMP exam, which tests their knowledge and skills in managing multiple related projects (a program) to achieve strategic objectives. The exam covers topics such as program governance, program planning, stakeholder engagement, benefits management, and program execution and control.

To qualify for the PgMP exam, candidates must have a secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree, or global equivalent) with at least four years of project management experience and four years of program management experience, during which at least four years were spent leading and directing programs. Alternatively, candidates with a four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or global equivalent) need at least four years of project management experience and seven years of program management experience, during which at least four years were spent leading and directing programs.

Preparing for the PgMP exam typically involves studying program management principles and practices, as well as familiarizing oneself with the PMI's standards and guidelines for program management. Many candidates choose to take PgMP exam preparation courses or use study materials to help them prepare for the exam.

Once certified, PgMP professionals are required to maintain their certification by earning 60 professional development units (PDUs) in program management every three years.
